Joshua 2:12 KJV 1900
Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the Lord, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father’s house, and give me a true token:
Joshua 2:13 KJV 1900
And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.
Introduction.
Deal with me with kindness and give me a true token.

When Rahab asked for kindness (ḥeseḏ) to be shown to her family she used a significant and meaningful word. Found about 250 times in the Old Testament, ḥeseḏ means loyal, steadfast, or faithful love based on a promise, agreement, or covenant. Sometimes the word is used of God’s covenant-love for His people and sometimes, as here, of relationships on the human level. Rahab’s request was that the spies make a ḥeseḏ agreement with her and her father’s family, just as she had made a ḥeseḏ agreement with them by sparing their lives.

אֱמֶת (ʾĕmeṯ). n. fem. truth, dependability, faithfulness. Denotes constancy, permanence, stability, and dependability, signifying the condition of being secure, stable, or dependable.

You must give me a sign of good faith The Hebrew phrase used here, oth emeth, literally means “sign of truth.

Let’s take a look at the life of Rahab, and why she would ask for kindness and a true token.
Jericho.
City size- several thousand. Only one person is named. Rahab.
Bro. Branham said she was bad to begin with, because she was a heathen.
And she was bad, to begin with, rotten to the core. A young, beautiful woman, by the name of Rahab. She was a heathen, to start with. And she was a prostitute on the street.     59-1004E - Why Cry? Speak!
She was still predestined seed.
101 How do you know that old bootlegger down here is not predestinated to Life? How do you know that old streetwalker that you won’t even speak to, how do you know that a little handshake and invite her to church wouldn’t make a saint of God out of her, yonder in the Glory?     60-0522M - Adoption #3
316 No matter how stooped you are in sin, what you have done, that doesn’t have one thing to do with it. You apply the Token. It’s for you. If you feel in your heart there is something tugging, It’s for you. You apply the Token.     63-0901M - Token
She didn’t get that way by herself.
Let’s picture her this morning for a few minutes now, as a young lady, a beautiful young woman whose some misfortune in life had been forced in, being a pagan, had been forced into the life that she was living. And many times people are forced into the life that they live.     58-1228 - Why Little Bethlehem?
87 I want to draw a picture. Maybe it isn’t right, but I want to make a point by it. We have no history of Rahab. We know that she was a prostitute.
Let’s think she was raised in a home that was real poor, and she became ill-famed. And she’s a beautiful, young woman. She went into the streets, to make her crippled mother and father a living; no way for her to work, only sell the morals of her body.
But I can imagine, all the time, she knew that was wrong. There was something in her, told her, “That’s not right to do that.” She knew it wasn’t.     60-0911M - As I Was With Moses, So I Will Be With Thee
27 Rahab the harlot, that we’re all familiar with, she being a young girl that was turned on the street by a heathen father and mother, that put her on the street because she was beautiful, and was to bring an income to them, on prostitution.
And yet, down in this immoral girl that was turned on the street, she had heard that there was a God Who answered prayer. And the first opportunity that she got, to accept that God or do something for Him, she did it.     60-1225 - God's Wrapped Gift
It’s not juvenile delinquency, it’s parent delinquency. We are taught to command our children. To train them up.
Proverbs 22:6 KJV 1900
Train up a child in the way he should go: And when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Genesis 18:17 KJV 1900
And the Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;
Genesis 18:18 KJV 1900
Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?
Genesis 18:19 KJV 1900
For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord, to do justice and judgment; that the Lord may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
Command.

(ṣāwâ). vb. to give an order. To command or give instruction or to appoint to a role or position.

This verb is frequently used for a human giving a command to another, often to a subordinate

Joshua 24:15 KJV 1900
And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
A part of predestination is the home you were brought up in, but Rahab had no Godly home.
Bro. Branham deals in depth with Rahab, The woman at the well, and especially the woman who washed Jesus feet, as to why they became the way they were.
That’s what makes a many a girl go wrong, because there’s nobody seems to care for her. There’d be half of them wouldn’t be the way they are, if there’s somebody would care for them.
Instead of mother and daddy out somewhere, carrying on in a barroom and letting their girl go anywhere, they ought to be at home praying, their Bible open, pleading for, like Job was, for his children.
Peradventure they do sin, he’d have a sacrifice for them. We need more prayer and more homes consecrated to God. That’s right.     62-0630E - The Meanest Man In Santa Maria
63 Now, probably her parents was the delinquent kind that went off, let her go. The poor girl earned her living by immoral living. You know what I mean. And so, that’s the way she had of making a livelihood.
We know it was horrible, but yet, maybe she’d been…We’re going to think that she was turned into that, because there’s some good behind the woman. It proved it. Right. Something back there was real.     62-0630E - The Meanest Man In Santa Maria
103 That little woman at the well, she had seen so much scruples about all their religions, and churches, and theology of that day till she was sick and tired of all of it. She didn’t go to none of it.
Don’t know but what she was just as well off. Poor child was maybe, by bad parents, laid out on the street, and she become a prostitute. Maybe the poor little fellow didn’t have…
Let me tell you, there’s a lot of bad women. We know that. But you can’t be a bad woman without being a bad man, you know. So there has to be somebody to make her bad. So…And sometimes them kids are turned out by a bad mammy, run out to barrooms and everything.
104 You talk about juvenile delinquency, I say it’s parent delinquency. You talk about the ignorance of the Kentucky people, some of them old mammies out there…Let their daughters come home of a morning with lipstick all over their face, and hair all twisted up, and clothes half off of them...
...with a cigarette in their hand, they’d take a barrel slat, or one of them hickory saplings out there, and she’d know when she went out the next time. Then you say illiterate. They can teach this bunch of hoodlums how to raise children. 62-0714 - The Uncertain Sound
Bro. Branham ties not caring for your children to letting them do whatever they want to do.
144 They talk about juvenile delinquency, it’s parent delinquency, that’s exactly what it is. Maybe that child had the same thing, a mother let her do anything. She turned out to be a woman of ill-fame.     62-0718 - Jesus Christ The Same Yesterday, Today, And Forever
171 You know, we talk so much in America about juvenile delinquency, it ain’t juvenile delinquent, it’s parent delinquency. Sometimes a girl goes wrong because her mother don’t make her do right. That’s exactly right. So a lot of times it’s parents’ fault, not children, a juvenile delinquency.     62-0724 - Sir, We Would See Jesus
27 I tell you. I think, today, we have such a juvenile crime wave across the nation, but, really, I think it started in the home. I think the parents began to let go. And if the child had been raised up in a good, old-fashion, godly home; I don’t say it would be all over, certainly not, but it would certainly give that child the right kind of influence.
I think, many times, that, homes that children has been brought up wrong, turned loose on the street, and just lived for themself while the mother stays in a barroom, and the father, and so forth. They don’t take care of this child.
Another thing, they don’t love it and give it the affections, to take it up. It’s young. You’ve got to teach it to love and respect, and to read the Bible.
28 I think of Susanna Wesley. I think she had seventeen children. I think that’s right. But she found two hours or more, every day, to pray. Down at the end of her dress, where the little boys knelt around, out of there produced a John and a Charles that changed the course of the world, saved the world in that day.
And she didn’t have a washing machine and a dryer, as we have today, and a dishwasher, and so forth, or a maid. The thing that…She did it all herself, but yet she could find time because she was putting an influence to some children that finally changed the course of the world. I think that’s the old-fashion mother, the old-fashion home, where prayer and the understanding of the Bible.
29 I believe, Abraham Lincoln never owned a book in his life, till he was of age, but the Bible and…I think it was either the Foxe’s Book Of Martyrs…I might not, it might have been another book. I think it was Pilgrim’s Progress, to be right. It was Pilgrim’s Progress, and the Bible. You see what kind of a character that molded?
30 Just let me go in your house and see what kind of pictures you got on your wall. Let me go to your home or your office, and let’s see what kind of music is playing.
What you read, what you look at, I can pretty well tell you what’s on the inside of you, see, because it feeds on that. See? And, oh, to a home, if we made a home more lovely, children wouldn’t want to run away.
Make things more for them, where they feel welcome and nice and comfortable at home; where, home, they can’t hardly wait till they get there. And that’s the way home should be. 63-1114 - Influence
Herod’s stepdaughter.
2 Timothy 3:14 KJV 1900
But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
2 Timothy 3:15 KJV 1900
And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
He learned those things from his mother and grandmother.
Not all on the mothers, fathers as well.
Ephesians 6:1 KJV 1900
Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
Ephesians 6:2 KJV 1900
Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)
Ephesians 6:3 KJV 1900
That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
Ephesians 6:4 KJV 1900
And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
The best gift a father can give his children is to be present.
128 These kids today needs a buddy. If they had a mother and father would stay home and take care of them, instead of out here in a barroom running around all night and things like that, wouldn’t have a juvenile delinquency. See?     64-0823M - Questions And Answers #1
The Expositor’s Bible, Volume 6: Ephesians to Revelation (Chapter XXVII: The Christian Household (Ephesians 6:1–9))
Children are exhorted to submission: fathers to gentleness. “Do not,” the apostle says, “anger your children”; in the corresponding place in Colossians, “Do not irritate your children, lest they be disheartened” (ch. 3:21). In these parallel texts two distinct verbs are rendered by the one English word “provoke.”
The Colossian passage warns against the chafing effect of parental exactions and fretfulness, that tend to break the child’s spirit and spoil its temper. Our text warns the father against angering his child by unfair or oppressive treatment. From this verb comes the noun “wrath” (or “provocation”) used in chapter 4:26, denoting that stirring of anger which gives peculiar occasion to the devil.
It is almost superfluous to insist on the apostle’s exhortation to treat children kindly. For them these are days of Paradise, compared with times not far distant. Never were the wants and the fancies of these small mortals catered for as they are now. In some households the danger lies in the opposite extreme from that of over-strictness. The children are idolised. Not their comfort and welfare only, but their humours and caprices become the law of the house. They are “nourished” indeed, but not “in the discipline and admonition of the Lord.”
It is a great unkindness to treat our children so that they shall be strangers to hardship and restriction, so that they shall not know what real obedience means, and have no reverence for age, no habits of deference and self-denial. It is the way to breed monsters of selfishness, pampered creatures who will be useless and miserable in adult life.
“Discipline and admonition” are distinguished as positive and negative terms. The first is the “training up of the child in the way that he should go”; the second checks and holds him back from the ways in which he should not go. The former word (paideia)—denoting primarily treating-as-a-boy—signifies very often “chastisement”; but it has a wider sense, embracing instruction besides. It includes the whole course of training by which the boy is reared into a man.—Admonition is a still more familiar word with St. Paul. It may be reproof bearing upon errors in the past; or it may be warning, that points out dangers lying in the future. Both these services parents owe to their children. Admonition implies faults in the nature of the child, and wisdom in the father to see and correct them.
Proverbs 23:13 KJV 1900
Withhold not correction from the child: For if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.
Sometimes we don’t physically turn them out, we turn them over to electronic devices.
125 You know, a lot of times we think about juvenile delinquency. I think a whole lot of it is parent delinquency. The kids had been taught to pray and serve God; instead of mama out somewhere at a card party, and her religious card party; and dad out at a golf course somewhere; and sister out with junior, out there on the street, running around.
Maybe things would been different if they had the old-fashion prayer altar, the Bible instead of a deck of cards. And throwed that television out the door, a long time ago, and it might have been a whole lot different.
You all, used to be wrong to go to the picture show. The devil put it right over on us. He brought it right in their house. See? See?     64-0418E - Jesus Keeps All His Appointments
There was something in Rahab’s heart, though she had been raised in a pagan home, when she heard about the Message of the hour, she believed it. Though she was a harlot, her instinct was to protect the messengers. She respected the Message they carried.
Joshua 2:9 KJV 1900
And she said unto the men, I know that the Lord hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.
Joshua 2:10 KJV 1900
For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.
Joshua 2:11 KJV 1900
And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the Lord your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
Joshua 2:12 KJV 1900
Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the Lord, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father’s house, and give me a true token:
Give me something real, something I can count on, something that won’t change. I’ve been lied to all my life, give me a true Token. I’m tired of tongues and doctrines and creeds, give me a true Token.
Joshua 2:13 KJV 1900
And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.
Give me my family.
They left her instructions.
Joshua 2:18 KJV 1900
Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s household, home unto thee.
310 When God’s wrath destroyed that big city, the token sign held her house safely. Amen. Why? ...the token was on her house, when the rest of the city shook to the ground.
What was it? What was it? Joshua, the messenger of God! God Himself recognized His messenger’s message. Amen! It proved it. It proved it. They recognized the message. He recognized His messenger’s message.
And when all the rest of the city shook down, there stood Rahab’s scarlet token over the door, and the rest of them was gone.     63-0901M - Token
Conclusion.
Rahab’s house would have been built on the outer wall, in the most vulnerable part of the city, she should have been the first to fall. How she must have felt, while the shaking is going on, something keeps holding me! It must be the scarlet cord! It must be the Life. It must be something real. A True Token.
